Maundy Thursday Reflection: The Hour Has Come
As we journey through Maundy Thursday, the unfolding story of Jesus’ final hours draws us closer to the cross. From the Upper Room to the Garden of Gethsemane, each moment reveals His love, courage, and willingness to fulfill the Father’s plan.
It begins with a simple yet profound act. In the Upper Room, Jesus sets aside His garments, takes up a towel, and stoops to wash His disciples’ feet. “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet” (John 13:5). With this humble act, He teaches them—and us—that true greatness is found in service. His commandment to “love one another, just as I have loved you” (John 13:34) isn’t given in theory but demonstrated in practice. This love calls us beyond words and into action, to serve with humility and grace.
As the evening deepens, Jesus introduces the bread and the cup, forever tying His sacrifice to the New Covenant. He explains, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28). These simple elements, the bread and wine, become symbols of His body broken and His blood shed. They remind us that salvation is not earned but freely given through His sacrifice.
Later, under the shadow of Gethsemane’s olive trees, we see another side of love: the love that perseveres through pain. Jesus invites His disciples to pray, saying, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation” (Luke 22:40). But as they sleep, He presses on in prayer, pouring out His heart to the Father. When He returns to find them still sleeping, He declares, “The hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners” (Matthew 26:45). The time for comfort has passed; now comes the hour of obedience.
Maundy Thursday is a tapestry of devotion, woven together by Jesus’ humble service, sacrificial love, and unwavering resolve. In the washing of feet, we learn the heart of servanthood. In the bread and cup, we see the cost of redemption. In the garden, we witness the courage to say “yes” to God’s plan, even when it leads to suffering.
Today, let these threads of Scripture remind you that Christ’s journey to the cross was deliberate, purposeful, and filled with love for you. As He walked through betrayal and sorrow, He never wavered. His love never faltered. Let His example guide you to love, serve, and trust in Him completely.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You have shown us what true love and devotion look like. Teach me to serve humbly, love deeply, and trust fully. As I reflect on all You endured this day, strengthen my heart to follow You wherever You lead. Thank You for Your unwavering love and for the salvation You secured for me. In Your Name Jesus, I Pray, Amen.
