Holy Week Devotion – Maundy Thursday Morning (April 17, 2025, 7:00 AM)
Scripture:
“And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’”
— Matthew 26:27–28 (ESV)
Reflection:
Maundy Thursday leads us into the Upper Room—a sacred space where Christ’s final hours with His disciples were filled with love, truth, and covenant. With bread and wine, Jesus didn’t just institute a ritual; He revealed the meaning of His mission. The cup He offered was not ceremonial—it was sacrificial. It pointed to His own blood, soon to be poured out on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.
This wasn’t a surprise twist in the story; it was the heart of it. Jesus, the true Passover Lamb, would take the wrath we deserved so we might receive the grace we could never earn. Every sip of that cup is a call to remember, to repent, and to rejoice.
As you meditate on this moment, let the weight of Christ’s words shape your day: “poured out for many.” That includes you. The covenant is sealed. The forgiveness is real. The grace is forever.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for the cup You drank and the blood You poured out. Help me never to take lightly the price of my forgiveness. Let the power of Your covenant stir my soul to deeper love and faithful obedience today. Amen.
Greek Word:
διαθήκη (diathēkē) — covenant, testament

Hebrew Word:
כָּפַר (kāphar) — to cover, to atone
Used in Old Testament sacrificial language, fulfilled in Jesus’ blood that covers sin once and for all.
